Chapter Three

Alone but Not Alone

There was moaning—lots and lots of moaning. Ronni’s head hurt so much it took every ounce of willpower to force her eyes open. There wasn’t much light, but enough for her to see there were others with her. The surface she was lying on was warm and moist, and when she tried to sit up, it moaned and shifted.

If that wasn’t disturbing enough, fingers wrapped around her wrist. A scream ripped out of its own accord, a piercing scream that echoed around and around. Once it stopped, the person beneath her asked, “Do you know where we are?”

She slid off him and onto another prone figure, but it didn’t react to her weight, nor at her elbows digging into its back. This lack of reaction bothered her until she heard the definite sound of breathing coming from it. She felt some comfort to know she wasn’t now resting on someone who was dead.

“I’m not certain,” she said once she’d calmed down, looking at the curved walls that surrounded them. It seemed they were trapped inside a giant ball of some sort, its walls giving off a soft glow, the only light they could see by.

When he eyes adjusted, she realized just how many people were crammed in there together, and in such a small space. Some must have been stacked as many as four high, most appearing unconsciousness or in deep shock—bloodied and battered. Those who were awake either sat in confused silence or moaned and wept.

The man who’d asked her the question managed to find his footing and stood. At such a strange, unsettling moment, it was odd that she noticed how handsome he was.

He offered her his hand. “Let’s find a way out of here.”

Ronni took his hand, surprised by how easily he pulled her to her feet. Of course, staying upright was an altogether different matter. She stepped on a number of people before finally being able to stand on something firm, although one of her feet appeared to be on someone’s leg. When she could finally stand still enough and no one complained about her treading on them, she took a long look around.

The place was definitely odd, round and with no windows or doors, although she noticed a hatch in the roof above her, maybe thirty feet up. There was no way they could get out that way. Then the whole place began vibrating, bringing yet more crying and moans from those packed into it, on top of which a high pitched whistle rose to such a level she had to cover her ears. A second later and the vibrations became heavy shuddering before a massive quake knocked them both off their feet, back on top of the mass of bodies.

Ronni clung to the one beneath her, but then, just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse, she and everyone else shot straight up into the air. She expected them all to fall back onto the floor, but it never happened.
